Dallas Cowboys: Could a bold trade save the Cowboys season? Don’t bet on it

Jon Machota, Cowboys beat writer for and The Dallas Morning News, answered your questions about the team in a live chat recently. Here are some highlights.

Question: If the Cowboys chose to go all in this year in a pretty weak NFC East, they will probably need to make a bold trade (Ajayi/Eagles last year). What is your level of confidence that the Cowboys front office can craft a deal for an impact player? Their history at trading is not encouraging, would you agree?

Machota: I would be very surprised if the Cowboys made any deals like that this season. Earl Thomas was the only realistic possibility. His fractured left leg ended that. If they were going to make a similar trade as the Eagles did last year, wide receiver would be the one that made the most sense. But again, I don’t see that happening.

Question: Do you think Sunday night was rock bottom for a struggling Dallas offense, or are even more significant woes still to come?

Machota: Oh, it could get worse. I still feel like everyone is playing hard. That could change if things continue to be a disaster on offense. And the offense won’t get a break this week. So basically what I’m saying is they haven’t hit rock bottom. It could definitely get worse.

Question: All things considered, was punting in overtime the right or wrong decision for Dallas?

Machota: I think punting is the right decision there if it was just going to be another run up the middle on fourth and 1. The Houston defensive line was playing very well. That doesn’t mean you don’t try to throw them off with a Dak run or a short pass on fourth down. Garrett certainly sounded on Monday like another run was coming if they went for it there. If that’s the case, punt it away and hope your defense can get a stop. I just thought that would have been a great opportunity to run some type of play that hasn’t been shown up to that point, something to catch the defense off guard while they were selling out to stop Ezekiel Elliott. But that’s really not Jason Garrett’s style in that situation.
